Mental Nudist?

Are you a men­tal nud­ist? Do your thoughts roam unadorned, undressed, through a cere­bral naturist’s land­scape free from imped­i­ment and restraint?

A men­tal nud­ist keeps it per­sonal, keeps it real. Unafraid to expose what “nor­mally” lies deep within, clothed in con­ven­tion and restraint, the men­tal nud­ist can be ratio­nal and prag­matic, Utopian and vision­ary, thought­ful, play­ful, abstract or precise.

Like all humans, men­tal nud­ists are social crea­tures, look­ing for other men­tal nud­ists with whom to share the bare naked truth! They too need a forum where they can find like-minded men­tal­ists to share thoughts, writ­ing, images, imag­in­ings – a men­tal cloth­ing optional forum for adults ready to bare it all. A place were cere­bral, deep, imag­i­na­tive, rea­son­ing men­tal nud­ists are welcome!

    Do I dare dis­robe my mind online? Will I have to strip away com­mon knowl­edge, aban­don tra­di­tion, cast aside rumors, dogma, and biases? Accord­ing to leg­end, Lady Godiva rode through town naked because if she did so, her hus­band agreed to relieve the towns­peo­ple of the bur­den­some taxes he had placed on them. She, out of com­pas­sion and kind­ness, over­came her embar­rass­ment in order to lessen their pain. What would enable me to become a men­tal nud­ist? Per­haps it’s the vision of help­ing to cre­ate an envi­ron­ment, a com­mu­nity, where all views are respected, where every­one is encour­aged to con­sider diver­gent ideas. While I hold onto my own beliefs and per­cep­tions with com­mit­ment and pas­sion, can I find the gen­eros­ity of spirit and the will to try to under­stand the flip side? It’s an adven­ture worth try­ing, don’t you think?

    Men­tal nudity is about tak­ing off the masks and cos­tumes you wear (your per­son­al­ity or per­son­al­i­ties), assum­ing that doing so reveals the “real” you. The per­sona you assume can be for pro­tec­tive or dec­o­ra­tive pur­poses; the ques­tion remains, how­ever, is it pos­si­ble to bare the inner, naked mind com­pletely, in any sit­u­a­tion? in all sit­u­a­tions? Is it a good idea to try?

    Cov­er­ing up is not nec­es­sar­ily as false as it may seem. For exam­ple, thoughts and lan­guage that are appro­pri­ate when you’re relax­ing in a bar with friends, or at a ball­game with your son, may not serve you well in the office, when speak­ing with Great Aunt Clotilda, or when in con­fer­ence with your child’s teacher.

    There is a thrill of con­nect­ed­ness as well as a vul­ner­a­bil­ity that comes with bar­ing your thoughts. There is a safety in the surety of know­ing what another truly thinks and feels that can move two peo­ple closer to true love.

    The men­tal nud­ist there­fore expe­ri­ences some­thing sim­i­lar to sex­ual inti­macy, but there is one major dif­fer­ence. When you give your body to a sex­ual encounter, you get it back — your part­ner doesn’t get to keep it. When you bare your mind, you give your part­ner or reader your ideas and ideals, and you can’t get them back.

    Espe­cially once your thoughts are in print, or on the inter­net, they are gone for­ever. Per­haps because they are emo­tion­ally charged, or cause an emo­tional reac­tion in the reader, recant­ing or revis­it­ing sel­dom can change the ini­tial per­cep­tion. (Look at the exam­ple of a per­son being labeled a sex offender and then being exon­er­ated. The stigma remains…or some­one who has been caught cheat­ing or lying, it is dif­fi­cult for him to regain trust.)

    Can you move beyond your shame, your dis­com­fort, your fear, your mod­esty, to risk bar­ing who you really are? Does the rel­a­tive anonymity of the inter­net help or hin­der this process? Does the inter­net allow you to hold onto some of your fear as you hide behind a “user­name”? Do you have the courage to keep test­ing your bound­aries, to live on the edge, and when you’re ready, take that last step that reveals your com­plete men­tal nudity? Is it even pos­si­ble to be com­pletely men­tally exposed?

    The men­tal nud­ist is defined as much by the ques­tions as by the answers.
